The essays of this volume, which were presented to Günter Walch on the occasion of his 65th birthday, explore the cultural construction of identity/ies. Rejecting assumptions of the "purity" of culture they foreground a concept of culture as dynamic, syncretized, creolized, or as hybrid. This project focusses on the splitting of the identity positions of self and other and, at the same time, supports the view that these identity positions are interdependent. Adding the theme of the history of English studies some of the essays entail reflections on the dis-/enabling conditions in East Germany before unification. Moreover, they draw on insights from anthropology, cultural materialism, discourse as well as feminist theory and investigate their impact on critical literary analysis. Concentrating on British and postcolonial literature in English the essays discuss drama, poetry and the novel in the early modern period and the 20th century. In particular, the volume offers a critical analysis of aspects of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest as well as Fulke Greville's plays which make the reader aware of the contradictory nature of early modern identity positions. Moreover, the reader is introduced to contemporary Indian English and Afro-Caribbean English poetry. Contents: G.
