This study explores how ex-centric subjects such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Audre Lorde use autobiography to express the sexual/textual construction of a self through their written and visual presentations. After surveying the theory and history of autobiography, the study shows how Pasolini and Lorde exploit and shift the boundaries of autobiography to include difference. The speaking writing subject inserts itself in a narrative that by addressing a reader, a "You", finds legitimation for its sexual and political life choices. Autobiographers always strive to find a way to render that "I" directly, without losing it to culture and other people’s definitions or appropriation.

Pasolini and Lorde express the specificity of the "I" by assigning to it difference. The analysis of Pasolini’s important early works and Lorde’s major works traces the parameters of the problem of difference, outlines the different approaches used and shows how these texts illuminate aspects of their own works.

Both Pasolini and Lorde anchor the "I" to the body to emphasize the importance of the material conditions of existence.
